National and International Breed clubs describe their dogs in a specific language by writing breed standards. The most desirable specimen, traits and specific working abilities become known as Purebreds and are promoted by breed registries. A breed registry is an official list of animals within a specific breed whose parents are known. Kennel club’s maintain registries directly or through breed clubs. Other kind of registries include multi-breed, non-affiliated breed clubs, and insurance agencies. The oldest registry known in the United States is the Field Dog Stud Book with records as early as 1874.
